Driver CPC: training deadline reminder

Driver CPC: training deadline reminder

If you're a lorry driver with 'acquired rights' the deadline to finish your first round of Driver CPC periodic training is 10 September 2014.
You risk being fined and even losing your livelihood if you don't finish your training in time.
The Office of the Traffic Commissioner also reminds operators to be aware of their drivers' training hours and the 10 September 2014 deadline to avoid penalties.
Driver CPC rules
Driver CPC was introduced in 2009 for lorry drivers.
New drivers had to start taking the Driver CPC initial qualification from then to start driving professionally.
Existing drivers were given 'acquired rights' which took their previous experience into account.
Training deadline
To stay within the rules, all drivers must do 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years.
The deadline for lorry drivers with 'acquired rights' is 10 September 2014.
  Check your training record
You can find Driver CPC periodic training courses online.
Not being aware will not be an excuse
DVSA's Chief Executive Alastair Peoples said:
"DVSA enforcement officers already routinely check the Driver CPC status of professional drivers. After the deadline they’ll be able to check whether ‘acquired rights’ lorry drivers have completed their training or are driving illegally. Not being aware of Driver CPC is not an excuse for drivers or operators".
Joan Aitken, lead Traffic Commissioner on Driver CPC, added that operators;
"could also find themselves before commissioners if there are issues around the circumstances in which a driver was working without the driver qualification card (DQC), or failed to produce it".

Make sure you do your homework, a visit in person to an LGV trainer should not present any problems to a legitimate company, and there should be no reason to part with any significant amounts of your money until the day of training.

Driver CPC: don't miss the bus

You have just 7 Months left to complete the 35 hours of periodic training to keep your Driver CPC if you're a bus or coach driver and got your vocational licence before 10 September 2008.
Since Driver CPC was introduced, over half a million professional drivers across the goods and passenger sectors have taken accredited periodic training. This is to further develop their knowledge and skills and help make sure they remain safe and responsible drivers throughout their career.
Periodic training courses
There are now over 3,000 approved training courses available to drivers. They cover a range of topics from fuel efficiency to tachograph and drivers' hours regulations or defensive driving.
All courses and providers have to meet strict criteria. They are both quality-checked on an ongoing basis, to make sure they meet the required standard.
Don't leave it until the last minute
Sep 12:  From The DSA chief executive, Rosemary Thew,
"I would urge all drivers who haven't yet started periodic training not to leave it until the last minute. If the deadline arrives and you drive professionally without a Driver CPC, you'll be committing an offence.
"If you're an operator and you cause or allow your drivers to drive without Driver CPC - you'll also be committing an offence.
"The idea of drivers completing regular training throughout their working life is not new - many have been doing it for years through operators who recognise the benefits of drivers developing their skills; helping to boost productivity as well as improve road safety."

Next Training Course:

We are now planning our next batch of DCPC training courses.  Our next one is scheduled to run on:  Saturday 1 March 14 9.0am – 4.0pm.  This Module will be ‘Regulations for Drivers’ – This is a good update on current & new legislation.  Those attending will gain 1 full module entitlement.

Venue:

The venue for the above will be the Second Club in Trench, Telford.  This is situated on the upper floor above the Sun Salon on the Trench road and entry is via the door down the side of the sun salon and just before the barbers shop.  On arrival you will need to ring the bell/intercom and you will be let in.

Tea & Coffee facilities are available for a small charge.

 Fees:

As this is a full 7 hour module, the fee for attending this is £65.00 and this includes the DSA/JAUPT ‘upload’ fee.  This can be paid on the day in cash or cheque only (Sorry, we do not have a facility for credit card payment).

Attendance / Registration:

Those wishing to register to attend should contact me via email: info@avtme.co.uk

I will also need a copy of your drivers licence (Both parts) in order that I can ‘upload’ you details to DSA/JAUPT.  If you could scan this in & e-mail that it would be helpful.

Cut off date for notifying attendance is Mon 24 Feb 14.

I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience, many thanks.
